Cotton Electric Co-op Seeks High School Students for 2011 Touchstone Energy Leadership Summit
Designed to excite and motivate high school students to become leaders of their communities, Cotton Electric Cooperative Inc. is seeking participants in the Touchstone Energy Leadership Summit to be held Jan. 8 in Oklahoma City. For the last 10 years, Cotton Electric and Oklahomas Touchstone Energy electric cooperatives have recognized the leadership abilities of hundreds of high school students throughout Oklahoma during the annual training.
Two students from the Cotton Electric service area will be selected to attend the summit and both will receive a $250 scholarship. The leadership training will be led by renowned speaker Rhett Laubach.
When decorating, remember that outdoor "icicle" lights use more energy because they have more bulbs per linear foot than regular light strands. Consider using regular strands of energy-saving LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights. They use less electricity and last up to 100,000 hours.
Capital credit checks amounting to $300,000 were issued recently by Cotton Electric Cooperative. A refund of capital credits demonstrates how a not-for-profit electric cooperative works. Annually, money over and above the cost of operations and other necessary expenses and reserves is declared margins. When the board of trustees determines that a portion of those margins can be refunded, members who contributed to those margins receive a share.
A share of the capital credits was allocated among active and inactive members and each check was mailed to the latest known address for the member. Checks addressed to members listed here were returned to the cooperative because of incorrect or insufficient addresses.
Eighth graders interested in developing leadership skills, learning about electric cooperatives and energy delivery and having some great summertime fun are encouraged to enter the annual Energy Camp youth writing contest.
To participate, students will be required to write a short paragraph, 50 words or less, on why they would like to attend Energy Camp.
Winners from Cotton Electrics service area will be selected from contest participants to attend the 2011 Youth Power Energy Camp held May 31-June 2 at Canyon Camp in Red Rock Canyon, southeast of Hinton.
The 47th annual Rural Electric Youth Tour kicks off in November with a preliminary essay contest. This years topic, Together We Save Energy Efficiency for Everyday Life will be the key focus for all submissions. Each year, students in Cotton Electrics service territory are eligible to compete in the preliminary rounds of the competition. The contest is open to all high school juniors in the Cotton Electric service area. The students and their families do not have to be Cotton Electric members. The contest is broken into three rounds and starts with the essay contest. Area juniors may submit an essay of approximately 600 words to the Cotton Electric headquarters.
An enhanced program offering rebates to Cotton Electric members investing in energy efficient air source or ground source heat pumps has been extended. The new deadline to take advantage of the program is Dec. 31, 2010.
Qualifying members may receive rebates up to $600 per ton with a maximum rebate of $6,000 per residence.
Certain specifications are required in order to qualify for the rebate. The indoor air handler must match the outdoor heat pump/condensing unit to be AHRI (Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute) certifiable. Homeowners should check with their contractor to make sure of this compatibility in order to achieve the required seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating.
