Important Roofing Legislation

We've all seen the stories on roofers who have no insurance, take money and leave town, or come into town for a storm, put on a roof and 6 months later the roof is leaking and the phone # is disconnected. This has been a problem in Oklahoma for years. In the past we have not had any regulation or oversight of the industry, and for that reason we have had many contractors who operate without workers compensation, liability insurance, do terrible work, and don't honor their warranties. Some roofers have just committed straight up fraud, embezzlement, and larceny. Those guys can be prosecuted, but that doesn't stop them from doing those things in the first place.There is a solution to this problem though. That solution is quite possibly the SB 2180. Below is a brief explanation of the bill's highlights:
It requires that roofing contractors:

Maintain workers compensation insurance as mandated by the state
Maintain liability insurance (this has not been required by law in the past)
File, renew, or properly amend a fictitious name certificate
Maintain an active status as a corporation with the Office of Secretary of State
File or renew a trade name registration
Notify the registrar of any changes such as name changes, address changes, any adjudication of guilt in reference to the Act.
File and pay taxes to the state
