** WHAT IS JESUS PRAYER?
This is the simple practice of prayer of the heart and the humble
invocation of the Lord Jesus. The sacramental power of the Name
of Jesus is believed to bring the Holy Spirit Into the heart of the
supplicant. It involves the stillness of the heart in which mind and body come
to rest and the Holy Spirit intercedes. In the Hebrew scriptures and for Jesus’ and Paul’s teachings in
the Christian scriptures the ‘peace of God’ is grounded in the Holy
Name of God. The Churches of the East have cultivated the
centuries-long tradition of the Jesus Prayer in which the Holy Name of Jesus—not a prayer phrase or
mantra—is the path to this Peace of God. Jesus is the giver of this prayer. He is our peace.
Contemplative prayer’s destination is communication with the living God. If you seek contemplation, start with the prayer of Jesus’ Name. The prayer session is guided by the Rev. Clyde Glandon, an Episcopal clergyman and Senior
Therapist at the Center for Counseling and Education in Tulsa. He is a graduate of the School for
Spiritual Directors at the Benedictine Monastery of Pecos, New Mexico.
