5. Verify insurance coverage. Our estimators bring a certificate of our workers workman's compensation insurance coverage with them.
6. What does the warranty from the contractor really cover? Most other roofers exclude coverage on interior damage from roof leaks.
7. Does the contractor have a permanent place of business?
8. Verify the contractor's number of years in business and time in the community.
9. Is the contractor a member of roofing organizations and the Better Business Bureau?

THE ENVELOPE PLEASE...
Neil Cagle, president of All American Roofing, was known for teaching business when he started his own small re-roofing firm during the summer of 1981. When his accountant informed him he was making more money in the summer, he gave up teaching. Today, Cagle's company has advanced all the way to the top spot on the Metro 50 list of fast-growing companies in the Oklahoma City metro area.
Cagle's philosophy is to finance conservatively to fund sustained growth. He believes owners need to live below their means, with a disciplined budget and financial plan.
After laying the groundwork, his company began branching out from its Bethany base. "We started our push in 1995, timing our continual growth so that in 1996, we could bring in trustworthy key people with advanced accounting skills to process a lot of jobs," Cagle explains. The company developed its own software that solved previous bottlenecks in paperwork processing. It tracks costs, posts potential problems and then devises accurate solutions. Fine-tuning All American Roofing included developing a relationship with a good banker, good references and a good track record with insurance carriers.
"Our roofers nail everything so there are fewer problems with wind damage and leaks," Cagle says. "The greater attention to detail through the exact placement of nails is the secret of how to put a roof together."
Roofing is a physically hard job with long days in the summer for the estimators, supervisors and punch-out men. "The secret of our success?" asks Cagle. "If I had to get pinned down, it is the right people properly trained for every stage of our job.
"We know how to supervise setting up, then tearing up a roof, taking care of the property, then installing correctly. That is why we were capable of as big a surge as last year," he says.
"We have adapted all the time with experienced roofers to thoroughly scope-out the jobs and good estimators to detail the jobs. Because customer satisfaction comes first, we then provide the best technical roof."
Today All American ranges to Michigan and beyond. It is a small, closely held corporation with actively involved owners. The focus is the niche market of re-roofing-99 percent residential-$2,000 to $3,000 at a time.
Cagle has advice for those considering having their homes re-roofed: Ask for references, do not pay upfront, request insurance certification, proof of workmens compensation and liability.

Our whole business is re-roofing houses with Elk shingles and we work very hard at it," says Neil Cagle, President of All American Roofing, Inc. They must, because AARI is one of the largest users of Elk products in the state of Oklahoma.
AARI, an Elk supporter since the company was founded in 1981, often upgrades homeowners to Elk products. "If the job appears to be a three tab or other type of project, our first move is to ascertain the customer's wants and needs," Neil explains. "Oftentimes we find they are amenable to changing over to a laminated Elk roof. We regularly help our customers make the decision by telling them the advantages of Prestique shingles," he adds.

The company has also worked to convert older, larger subdivisions from wood shingles to Elk laminates. "We've been very proactive in helping homeowner's associations reword restrictive covenants in such a way that laminates such as Prestique will meet the guidelines," Neil says.
AARI offers homeowners the complete Elk package for a more finished look. "Our customers often choose our company because of the number of extra options we include in each project," Neil says. "For example, we always include Z Ridge on all laminated jobs because we want our projects to look better. We believe that if we spend a few more dollars to make our projects look better, it will sell our next job. Our customers recognize this and regularly refer us to their friends and neighbors," he explains.
In fact, AARI was one of the first roofing contractors in Oklahoma to install Z Ridge. "We had such a huge surge in business when we started to use Z Ridge that we now use it on every job," Neil says.
Neil credits AARI's success to the "good team effort" between AARI's employees, their ABC Supply-Oklahoma City representative Nick Lewis, and their Elk district sales manager, Ron McCown. "Our Elk rep is good to us. Ron meets with our sales staff twice a year for product training- how Elk products are made, their advantages, and specific competitive differences. The little things like application techniques for better wind resistance that make Elk products higher quality in the long run," Neil says.
Over the years, AARI has grown a favorable reputation along with Elk in the Oklahoma City area because both companies are considered quality- and service-oriented companies. "Elk's done such a good job that many homeowners won't hire a contractor who doesn't offer Elk or one who uses a second-rate shingle," Neil says. "By offering Elk products, we establish credibility in the homeowner's eyes. Elk has the best products in the market."
