Here we are, well into a new year, one which will see considerable change in our profession, that of real estate appraisal. If you have been doing appraisals for some time, you are aware of the changes that have occurred in the recent past and those that are occurring and will occur in the near future. The new Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, which became effective on July 1, 2006, incorporated the Scope of Work concept more deeply into the appraisal development process. This did not really change the process, but did change how we determine what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, and the way in which we approach assignments. I think that this may have been the biggest change in the appraisal profession in the last ten years. Other recent changes include the changes to the Fannie Mae forms, some of which are still creating controversy almost two years later. And, of course, we are getting ready for the changes in appraiser licensing qualification that will occur on January 1, 2008. It is a rather exciting time to be an appraiser!
