So, where are we these days in terms of the stock and bond markets and the economy?
At this point, in this recession cycle we are about where we have been, at the same time, in other recession cycles. Unemployment and housing, though, are still sluggish and likely will be slow to perk up.
Since this was a debt crisis and recession, it is interesting to note that total (personal, corporate, governmental) debt today is less than it was in, say, 2006. That includes the significant expansion of governmental debt through the TARP and the stimulus. So, as a society, we are working our way out of debt.
This recession was one of the worst since the great depression and recovering from it will take some time. However, to get a better sense of where we are, we can hear what the markets think is coming our way.
First, the stock market (as measured by the Dow Industrials) fell 53% from its peak in October of 2007 to its low in early March of 2009. Since then, however, the market has recovered about half of what it lost. Interestingly, stock market volatility after having shot way up between 2007 and 2009 has resumed a level not far from where it was in 2006. So, the stock market which tries to predict the future is forecasting better times than at the bottom.
The bond market also tries to look into the future. Today, with extremely low interest rates, the bond market sees no inflation. In the past, when the bond market sensed future inflation, it demanded higher return on bonds. That is not happening now.
So, taken together, the message seems to be: no double-dip recession, no inflation, building recovery. And perhaps last but not least we should all have patience.
